To find a potential mate, male sharks cruise the waters looking for females that are ready to breed. Males use their sensitive electroreceptors to pick up on the electrical signals produced by the estrous females. Once a shark identifies a female, it will follow her, often releasing bursts of small electric jolts which stimulate the female’s sexual arousal. Depending on the species, sharks may be able to detect the electrical signals produced by a potential mate for up to 20 km!

Sharks give birth to live young, and the gestation period can take between 22 and 30 months. When a pregnant shark goes to give birth, she will lay her eggs in a nursery area, then swim away from the area and give birth. After a few months, she will return to the nursery to retrieve her eggs and give birth to her next batch of babies.
