The rise of a pair of pants refers to the distance between your body and the waistband. The higher the rise, the more your pants will bunch up when you sit. And while a high rise may be stylish, it can also cause discomfort if you’re not wearing fitted shirts or other items.

To measure front rise on pants, hold the hem at the widest part of your legs and mark the spot where the pants end on your leg. Align this mark with the crease where your pants meet your ankles. Measure the distance between the two marks, which is the front rise. To find back rise, measure the distance from the top of the waistband to the center of the crotch.

Grab a pair of pants that fit well around your waist and hold them up so the hemline just touches your upper thighs. Measure the distance from the edge of the waistband where your pants hit your thighs to the crotch line. This is the length of your back rise.
