What does African American history mean to you?

One way to describe the African American experience is as a long struggle for equality. From chattel slavery to Jim Crow to mass incarceration, we have endured injustice. But African American history is also about the triumph of the human spirit. It’s the story of countless ordinary people who have persevered against insurmountable odds, pushing back against oppression and inequality.

What does African American history mean to me?

I often think about how different my life would have been if I hadn’t been born black in America. Having to spend a majority of my life learning how to deal with racism, and still being treated as less than human in many places, has made me incredibly strong and resolute. It makes me feel proud to be an example of strength and perseverance for my fellow black people and other minorities. Even though racism still exists, I’ve learned that it can be beat.

The legacy of African American history means that as a culture and a people, we have made remarkable contributions to the advancement of other people and the advancement of the human condition. We have fought for freedoms and human rights that were denied to enslaved ancestors and their descendants — and we continue to fight for those rights today.
