The purpose of this mitochondrial membrane is to isolate the contents of the cell that contain the respiratory machinery from the contents of the cell that contain the rest of the cell’s machinery. This allows for an efficient transport of chemical energy from one place to the other that is rapidly created. ATP is the end product of oxidative phosphorylation.
