Why is math so hard for me?
If you have a background in a non- math related subject, you’re probably used to solving problems in a way that isn’t so structured. You might remember solving a jigsaw puzzle by looking at the picture and trying to put it together. After some frustration, you realize that you can use a grid to line up the pieces. With a grid, you can easily see the way the pieces fit together and that makes solving the puzzle a much easier process.

People learn math differently from one another. If you learn a new skill, such as riding a bike or playing an instrument, there are plenty of ways to practice and get better. Not so with math. There are no coaches or teachers to tell you how to do it. You have to figure it out on your own.

If you’re struggling to understand one of the most basic concepts in elementary school, chances are it’s because it’s new to you—not because it’s inherently difficult. Children learn new concepts best when they are presented in ways that they are comfortable with. For example, if a toddler is struggling to understand addition, help them by giving them a bunch of small things to count and build up to the larger number.
